Helen Waterman Meyer papers, 1939-1948.

The Helen Waterman Meyer Papers includes black-and-white copy prints of photographs from two photograph albums, photocopies of the albums and some loose photographs that reflect Helen Waterman Meyer's time at the UAF and other parts of Alaska in 1946 to 1948 . Meyer served as Head Matron at University of Alaska Fairbanks (then University of Alaska). This collection includes photographs of students in class and in the dormitories, fishing and picnicking at Birch Lake and Chena River, as well as images of activities such as the Freshman Bonfire and President Eisenhower's visit in August 1947. In the photocopies of the albums, some of the students and faculty are identified in the pictures. In addition to student and campus photographs, there are photographs of houses in Fairbanks and downtown Fairbanks pictures, photograph of the Baranof Hotel in Juneau, the Valdez wharf, the waterfront and city of Nome, and a sled dog race. Additionally, this collection contains a reprint of a paper titled "License and Control of Prostitution" by Helen W. Meyer, presented at the Convention of Women Peace Officers of California, October 19, 1939, at Santa Cruz CA. The author was a police officer, and in this work presented her view that the controlling of prostitution by licensure would produce negative consequences.

Helen Waterman Meyer, born in Moline, Illinois, was the first city school nurse for Santa Cruz, California. Meyer was a member of the California Nursing Association, National Retired Teachers Association and president of the Peace Officers Association of Santa Barbara. For a time, circa 1939, Meyer was a police officer in Santa Barbara, California. In 1946-1948, Meyer served as Head Matron at University of Alaska, now University of Alaska Fairbanks.
